Everyone in the USA has to have a social security number, children included.
It's a fairly painless process - form filling for each member of the family - at your local Social Security office which you'll find easily on the Internet or in your phone book.
It's worth memorizing your Social Security number - on every form you fill out as long as you live in Silicon Valley, you'll need to write it down.
Tip:
Social security offices work on a first come first served basis. Appointments are available; however you may have to wait up to six weeks for a dedicated time. If you need to get in earlier, try arriving half an hour before the office opens and taking a number.
